Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that results in recurrent seizures due to abnormal brain activity. Symptoms of epileptic seizures include:

  • Confusion
  • Staring
  • Involuntary Jerking Movements of the Arms & Legs
  • Loss of Consciousness
  • Loss of Awareness

A Seizure is Not Always Epilepsy

A seizure is a symptom of epilepsy but experiencing a seizure does not automatically mean an individual has epilepsy. It typically requires two or more seizures for epilepsy to be considered as a diagnosis. There are various causes of seizures or convulsions. Epilepsy is generally ruled out due to normal EEG readings as well as a lack of response to anti-seizure medication, in which case the seizures will be treated with medications and psychotherapy. You are always encouraged to seek advice from your doctor after experiencing a seizure, whether it is the first time or reoccurring.

Risk Factors & Treatment for Epilepsy

Epilepsy can occur in any individual at any age. There are certain risk factors associated with epilepsy including:

  • Age – Children & Older Adults
  • Family History
  • Dementia
  • Stroke
  • Head Trauma
  • Brain Disease

In order to be diagnosed with epilepsy it is important to understand your medical history. It requires two or more seizures for this to be considered as a possible diagnosis. A neurological exam and various blood tests are required as well as an EEG. An MRI or PET scan might also be essential. From there, treatment begins with appropriate medication. These come with potential side effects that will be discussed and considered when exploring your options. Surgery or other therapies are additional treatment options if medication is not effective at easing the occurrence of seizures.
